What means
It represents /k/, not the vowel /u/.
Ol Onal charts group letters by the first vowel in their names, so UK sits in the U row. That row clue is part of its name, not a vowel added to the sound.
Why was Ol Onal created?
To write Bhumij in a dedicated alphabet.
Mahendra Nath Sardar developed it during 1981–1992. Before Ol Onal, Bhumij was also written in the Odia, Bengali, Devanagari, and Latin scripts. In 1992, the Bhumij organization Adim Bhumij Samaj selected Sardar’s design in a contest among three proposals.
Ol Onal’s name combines ol (“to draw”) and onal (“shape or diagram”). By 2022, the script appeared in teaching books, periodicals, ritual works, banners, inscriptions, wedding invitations, and wall paintings.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
