What 𞗡 means

It represents /n/, as in “no.”

“In” is its name, not a pronunciation. Ol Onal charts sort letter names by their first vowel; Ol Chiki for Santali and Nag Mundari use similar charts.

Why was Ol Onal created?

Mahendra Nath Sardar developed Ol Onal between 1981 and 1992 for Bhumij, an eastern Indian language. In 1992, Adim Bhumij Samaj chose his design from three proposals. Bhumij uses Odia, Bengali, Devanagari and Latin scripts.

Teaching and print used Ol Onal capitals; lowercase forms were called Galang Onal.

By 2022, Ol Onal appeared in Bhumij rituals, inscriptions and wedding invitations.

Why can older Ol Onal text look like Latin?

Because fonts made in 2013–2014 mapped Ol Onal designs to Latin code positions; without the font, text may show Latin letters.
