Text symbol

What 𞗜 means

The vowel /i/.

Ol Onal runs left to right; each vowel is its own letter, not a mark added to a consonant.

Why was Ol Onal developed?

To create a written form for Bhumij.

Sardar developed Ol Onal between 1981 and 1992; in 1992, Adim Bhumij Samaj in Odisha chose it in a contest. Bhumij was also written in Odia, Bengali, Devanagari, and Latin.

By 2022, Ol Onal appeared in schoolbooks, rituals, notices, memorials, and wedding invitations. Its early lowercase set, Galang Onal, fell out of teaching and print. Fonts documented in 2013–2014 mapped Ol Onal shapes onto Latin code slots, so their text may not be Unicode Ol Onal.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𞗜 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
