ol onal letter it

Ol Onal Letter It

14/44

Ol Onal It represents Bhumij’s dental t, with the tongue against the upper teeth. Its name starts with I because Ol Onal groups consonants by their opening vowels. The Ol Onal alphabet (Bhumij Lipi) is the script for the Bhumij language.

Text symbol

What 𞗝 means

A dental t consonant.

Its sound is /t̪/, made with the tongue at the upper teeth. Ol Onal groups consonants by their first vowel, so It sits in the I row.

Ol Onal was created to write Bhumij.

Mahendra Nath Sardar developed Ol Onal during 1981–1992 for Bhumij, spoken in Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Bhumij writing used Bengali, Devanagari, Odia and Latin scripts; the Odisha group Adim Bhumij Samaj chose his design from three proposals.

By 2022 it appeared in primers, magazines, rituals, invitations, banners and memorials.

Fonts from 2013–2014 used non-Unicode mappings, so old files may need the intended font.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𞗝 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
