It represents the rounded vowel heard in Spanish luna. Mahendra Nath Sardar developed Ol Onal from 1981 to 1992 to write Bhumij. In 1992, the Adim Bhumij Samaj chose it from three designs in a community contest; Bhumij had also been written in Odia, Bengali, Devanagari and Latin. By 2022, teaching and print used only the capital letters; the separate lowercase design, Galang Onal, had fallen out of use. Ol Onal is also used in education, community rituals, inscriptions, banners, wedding invitations and wall paintings.
