What means
It writes /dʒ/, like the j in the English word “jam.”
Bhumij is a language spoken in parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Assam. Bengali জ্, Devanagari ज् and Odia ଜ্ match Uj’s sound.
How did Ol Onal become the Bhumij alphabet?
A Bhumij organization selected it in a 1992 contest.
Mahendra Nath Sardar developed it from 1981 to 1992 for Bhumij, then also written in Odia, Bengali, Devanagari and Latin.
In Bhumij, ol means “to draw” and onal means “shape or diagram.” Teaching and print favored uppercase Ol Onal; lowercase Galang Onal fell out of use. By 2022, Ol Onal served ritual purposes and appeared on banners, inscriptions and wedding cards.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
