What 𞋞 means
It writes Wancho’s plain «u» vowel, like the vowel in English “moon.”
Banwang Losu developed the Wancho script during 2001–2012 to represent Wancho sounds, especially tone, that Latin-letter spelling did not show clearly. Village elders and community workshops helped refine it; Losu published a teaching book in 2013.
In a Wancho spelling, 𞋞 writes a vowel sound; by itself, it does not name a word.
Why does Wancho letter U change with tone marks?
The vowel stays «u»; neighboring letters and marks shape the full reading.
After 𞋁 (Wancho letter A), 𞋞 completes the diphthong /aʊ/, one vowel sound that glides from «a» toward «u», like the vowel in English “cow.”
A tone mark can follow the vowel. Northern and Southern Wancho varieties use different tone-mark pairs, so the marks show tone according to the variety being written.
In Wancho writing, this is a regular vowel letter; the full reading depends on the surrounding spelling.
Drift: Some schools teach the purpose-built Wancho script as of 2026; Latin and Devanagari remain common alternatives for writing the language.
