What means
It represents the r consonant in Bhumij writing. Bhumij is a language spoken in parts of eastern India. In the letter chart, UR is the name of this letter; its sound is r, not a separate “ur” syllable.
How was the Ol Onal script chosen?
A Bhumij community group selected it in 1992. Mahendra Nath Sardar developed Ol Onal between 1981 and 1992. Adim Bhumij Samaj chose it from three proposals so Bhumij could be written in a dedicated alphabet. Before then, Bhumij had also been written in Odia, Bengali, Devanagari, and Latin scripts.
The script began with two cases: capital letters called Ol Onal and lowercase letters called Galang Onal. By the 2022 Unicode proposal, Galang Onal had fallen out of teaching and print. That proposal also records Ol Onal in Bhumij primers, a bilingual magazine, ritual writing, banners, inscriptions, wedding invitations, and wall paintings.
