Ol Onal letter E

𞗨 is the standalone e-vowel letter in Ol Onal. Ol Onal, also called Bhumij Lipi or Bhumij Onal, is an alphabet for the Bhumij language. By 2022, it appeared in learning materials, ritual writing, wedding invitations and inscriptions; its planned lowercase series, Galang Onal, had fallen out of use.

What 𞗨 means

It represents /e/, not the English name “ee.”

Ol Onal writes every vowel as a full letter, instead of attaching a vowel mark to a consonant. The slashes label a speech sound.

How was Ol Onal accepted as a Bhumij script?

A Bhumij community organization chose it in a 1992 contest.

Mahendra Nath Sardar developed Ol Onal between 1981 and 1992. Adim Bhumij Samaj, a Bhumij community organization, chose it in a contest among three script proposals. Bhumij is also written with other alphabets, including Devanagari, Bengali, Odia and Latin.

Why does 𞗨 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
