Why was Ol Onal created for Bhumij?
It gave Bhumij a dedicated alphabet. Mahendra Nath Sardar developed Ol Onal from 1981 to 1992 for Bhumij, which was also written in Bengali, Odia, Devanagari, and Latin scripts. The Adim Bhumij Samaj, a Bhumij community group, chose his design in a 1992 contest.
The first design also included lowercase forms called Galang Onal. Teaching and print used only the Ol Onal capitals; Unicode 16.0 encodes no Galang Onal forms.
