How did Ol Onal develop?
Mahendra Nath Sardar developed it for writing Bhumij.
He worked on it during 1981–1992; Adim Bhumij Samaj chose it in a 1992 community contest. By 2022, teaching and print used the capital forms; the original lowercase set, Galang Onal, had fallen out of use. Bhumij is also written in Odia, Bengali, Devanagari and Latin scripts.
Fonts made in 2013–2014 mapped Ol Onal forms to Latin character positions, so without the matching font they display as Latin. The stored text is Latin characters, not Unicode Ol Onal.

1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
