What means
It is the voiced /g/ sound, as in English “go.” Eg is a consonant letter in Ol Onal, the alphabet used to write Bhumij.
Why do older Ol Onal fonts use Latin letters?
They map Latin characters to Ol Onal shapes.
The five fonts documented for Ol Onal in 2013–2014 used a non-Unicode Latin mapping: a Latin character drew each Ol Onal shape, so the text could look like Ol Onal while storing Latin characters.
Why was Ol Onal created?
It was designed as an alphabet for writing Bhumij.
Mahendra Nath Sardar developed Ol Onal during 1981–1992. In 1992, Adim Bhumij Samaj, a Bhumij community organization in Odisha, selected his design in a contest that considered three proposals. The name combines words meaning “to draw” and “shape or diagram.”
Bhumij has also been written in Odia, Bengali, Devanagari, and Latin scripts. Ol Onal originally had uppercase letters and a lowercase set called Galang Onal. By 2022, teaching and print used the capitals, while Galang Onal was reported unused; the script also appeared in ritual writing, wedding invitations, inscriptions, wall paintings, banners, and pamphlets.
