What 𞊥 means
It represents the Toto vowel /u/. This is a standalone vowel letter, not a mark attached to a consonant.
Why was the Toto script made?
For education in Toto, digital communication, and language preservation. Work began in 2014; community member Dhaniram Toto launched the alphabet in May 2015.
Earlier Toto writing used Bengali or Latin spellings, which could leave some sound contrasts unclear, including breathy vowels (spoken with a breathy quality) and front-rounded vowels (made with the tongue forward and lips rounded). The community chose a new set of letters, whose shapes were based on everyday objects or ideas with Toto names beginning in the matching sound.
A 2024 orthography study reports that Bengali-script writing remained common, while Latin spellings also appeared in digital messages; the dedicated Toto script exists alongside them.
Is 𞊥 the same as u or ঊ?
They can represent the same vowel, but they are different characters. In Latin-script Toto, u writes /u/; Bengali-script Toto writing uses ঊ for that sound. These are spellings in other scripts, not alternate forms of 𞊥.
