What 𐑏 means
The English “yoo” sound, as in “few.”
Church leaders promoted Deseret to help children and immigrant converts learn English. Its designer, George D. Watt, had studied Isaac Pitman’s shorthand, a system for quickly recording speech.
Was EW part of the standard Deseret alphabet?
No; EW appeared only in expanded versions.
A letter George D. Watt sent Church president Brigham Young in 1854 uses the expanded version. The final printed alphabet spelled this sound with two letters.

Worth knowing
- Why can old Deseret EW look different? Unicode shows its 1854–55 form; by 1859–60, handwriting and metal type used a reshaped form. A historical scan may show that later shape.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𐑏 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
