Cherokee Letter Ge

9/92

Ꭸ is the Cherokee syllable ge; the surrounding Cherokee word gives it meaning. To type it, use a Cherokee keyboard layout or a Cherokee transliterator. The syllabary was created to write Cherokee speech, and its printed forms later gained a smaller case-pair, ꭸ.

Text symbol

What Ꭸ means

It represents the ge syllable in Cherokee.

That is a sound value, not a standalone English translation. In a Cherokee word, Ꭸ contributes one syllable; the surrounding syllables make up the word.

What is the history of the Cherokee syllabary?

It was created as a writing system for Cherokee speech.

The script developed during 1815–1821. Engravings at Red Bird River Shelter have been interpreted as experiments in creating it, supporting an early-nineteenth-century origin. Sequoyah developed the syllabary to put Cherokee speech on paper so messages and knowledge could travel. The Cherokee Nation adopted it in 1825. In 1828, Samuel Worcester’s press helped launch the bilingual Cherokee Phoenix, giving the syllabary a public and political role amid forced removal.

How did Ꭸ move from handwriting into print?

Printing changed its form; it kept its syllabic role.

The printed characters grew from handwritten designs adapted for type. Cherokee later gained smaller lowercase case-pairs, including ꭸ for Ꭸ. In the 21st century, the syllabary appears in signs and classrooms in Oklahoma and North Carolina, as well as in digital lessons, documents, and social media. Cherokee is related to other Iroquoian languages; a resemblance to Latin type does not give Ꭸ a Latin-letter value.

In Cherokee writing, Ꭸ is an ordinary syllable; outside that context, readers may not know what it says.

Treat Ꭸ as Cherokee writing, not decorative English lettering.
