Cherokee Letter A

1/92

Ꭰ is the Cherokee syllabary sign for the syllable “a.” In a Cherokee word, it is one sound unit; alone, it usually does not give a complete message. Sequoyah developed the writing system for Cherokee, and it later appeared in a newspaper and in ceremonial inscriptions.

What Ꭰ means

It represents one Cherokee syllable.

The syllable is labeled “a.” Cherokee uses a syllabary, a writing system whose signs represent syllables; neighboring signs combine to form words. On its own, Ꭰ gives a sound cue, not a full-word translation.

Sequoyah developed the system for Cherokee, an Iroquoian language. Its shapes were influenced by printed letters, but the syllabary was designed around Cherokee speech. Sequoyah developed it during 1815–1821; the Cherokee Nation adopted it in 1825, and Samuel Worcester and Cherokee collaborators finalized type in 1827.

Why was the Cherokee syllabary made?

It gave Cherokee speakers a writing system built for their language.

Sequoyah moved from trying word-by-word symbols to representing recurring Cherokee syllables. The system could be used to write messages and teach the language.

In 1828, the Cherokee Phoenix printed Cherokee alongside English. A Manitou Cave inscription from that year records a stickball ceremony; researchers interpret some writing set in reverse as addressing spiritual beings.

What does a lone Ꭰ mean?

Alone, it gives a syllable, not a complete message.

A Cherokee reader may recognize the syllable, while someone who does not read Cherokee may not know what the lone sign means in the message. Ask for the surrounding word before trying to translate it. Beside English, it may be a Cherokee-language element or a lesson example.

As of 2026, Cherokee Nation programs teach the syllabary and support its use on digital devices.

At home in Cherokee writing; outside it, a lone syllable can leave recipients without enough context.

Ꭰ is the Cherokee syllable “a,” not the English word “a.”

2

Why does Ꭰ show as a box?

That usually means the font lacks Cherokee coverage. A browser or text editor needs a Unicode font that includes Cherokee to display the character.

Can I send Ꭰ as a Cherokee greeting?

No. It represents one syllable, so a greeting needs the complete Cherokee word or phrase.
