What Ꭶ means
Ꭶ represents the Cherokee syllable ga.
A syllabary is a writing system whose signs represent syllables. A single sign like Ꭶ does not have a fixed English translation; its meaning comes from the Cherokee word it appears in. Cave carvings from the early-19th-century have been interpreted as experiments with the developing script.
Sequoyah developed the system to make Cherokee speech writable. Printers later adjusted some signs to suit available type.
What was the Cherokee syllabary made for?
It was created to write Cherokee and carry it into public life.
After manuscript use, the syllabary appeared in the bilingual Cherokee Phoenix in 1828. During the 1830s, it also carried religious, legal, and political writing through the removal crisis. As of 2026, Cherokee writing is used in education and on public signs.
Ꭶ or Ꭷ?
Ꭶ is ga; Ꭷ is ka.
They are separate signs in the same g/k row. The nearby signs include Ꭸ ge, Ꭹ gi, Ꭺ go, Ꭻ gu, and Ꭼ gv. Cherokee writing later influenced James Evans as he devised Cree Syllabics; printers also adjusted sign shapes for the type they had. A Roman-letter resemblance does not set a Cherokee sound.
In Cherokee writing, Ꭶ is an ordinary syllable sign; outside it, the character has no universal meaning.
Read Ꭶ as Cherokee ga, not as the English letter G.

2Questions people ask
1Why does Ꭶ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Cherokee block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
