What ꭶ means
Read it as the spoken Cherokee syllable ga.
The Cherokee syllabary is a writing system in which each character stands for a spoken syllable. Sequoyah developed it; Unicode dates its development to 1815–1821. In 2011, an archaeological study interpreted marks at Kentucky’s Red Bird River Shelter as possible experiments in creating the script.
By 1828, the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper printed in Cherokee and English, helping connect Cherokee communities spread across the nation. Writing carved in Manitou Cave that year has been interpreted as a ceremonial message to ancestors. As of 2026, Cherokee is still written in Oklahoma and North Carolina. Older Cherokee writing had no case distinction; Unicode 8.0 kept the full-height forms as capitals and added lowercase partners, preserving existing font designs.
