What 𛱙 means
Type 1BC59 in Word for Windows, then press AltX.
Microsoft still documents this Word-specific method in 2026; it is not a Windows-wide keyboard shortcut. The basic Duployan keyboard is only a starting layout, so a dedicated layout should match the shorthand system you use.
How did the Ooh vowel travel beyond French shorthand?
It belongs to Sloan’s English adaptation of a wider shorthand family.
Émile Duployé published his French system in 1860 to record speech quickly. John Mathew Sloan’s English adaptation followed in 1883 and includes this Ooh vowel.
Starting in 1891, Jean-Marie Le Jeune’s adaptation appeared in the Kamloops Wawa, a newsletter that used Duployan to write Chinook Wawa and several Indigenous languages in British Columbia. That adaptation had its own inventory, so this Sloan-specific Ooh sign should not be assumed to occur in Chinook writing.
Why does the Duployan glyph change inside words?
Connected shorthand strokes alter its outline. Duployan letters join into cursive words; surrounding strokes determine how a vowel meets them. A character on its own is only the base form, not a complete handwritten word.

1Why does 𛱙 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
