Shorthand is a way to write speech quickly. Émile Duployé published the French system in 1860.
How did shorthand become Chinook Pipa?
It became a writing system for Chinook Jargon and Indigenous languages.
In 1890, Catholic missionary Jean-Marie Lejeune adapted it for Chinook Jargon, a trade language of the Pacific Northwest, and Indigenous languages in inland British Columbia. Local learners passed lessons on and wrote prayers and songs. From 1891 to 1923, the mostly Chinook Jargon newsletter Kamloops Wawa printed it.
Why does its shape change in text?
Its shape can change as letters join.
Duployan letters connect within words, so this letter’s strokes may flow into neighboring letters. Fonts and text-shaping software can affect the joined form.
