What 𛰾 means
It represents G-R-S with one consonant sign. A 1918 English course by Denis R. Perrault groups it among combined consonants. Duployan letters join in words, so the sign’s outline can shift with its position.
How did Duployan become Chinook writing?
It expanded from French shorthand into a writing system for Chinook Jargon. Émile Duployé simplified Aimé Paris’s French shorthand to make it easier and quicker to read. An early version appeared in 1860; the distinct Duployé system followed in 1867.
Missionary Jean-Marie Le Jeune adapted it for Chinook Jargon, a shared regional language, and other Indigenous languages in British Columbia. The Kamloops Wawa newsletter (1891–1923) used the adaptation as a full writing system.

1Why does 𛰾 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
