duployan letter f

Duployan letter F

5/143

𛰄 is the F consonant sign in Duployan shorthand, first published in France in 1860 to write spoken French quickly. In 1890, Jean-Marie Le Jeune adapted the system as Chinuk pipa (“Wawa writing”) for Chinook Jargon and other Indigenous languages in interior British Columbia. It became a community writing system used for lessons, songs and print, as well as shorthand notes.

What 𛰄 means

No; the writing system and nearby signs supply the rest.

Duployan was adapted for different languages, so the letter name alone cannot tell you every spelling rule in a historical text.

In shorthand, signs join into flowing words. The British Columbia adaptation grouped signs into syllable-sized units, usually with one circle-shaped vowel per unit. Read this F sign with its neighbors and the spelling system in use.

Why does 𛰄 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
