What 𛱗 means
Read this as the “uh” vowel in Sloan’s English shorthand. Duployan adaptations changed their sign inventories to fit different languages.
How did Duployan become Chinuk Pipa?
Le Jeune adapted it for Chinook Jargon and local languages.
Émile Duployé devised and published the French shorthand in 1860 for faster writing. In 1890, Catholic missionary Jean-Marie Raphaël Le Jeune expanded it for Chinook Jargon, a regional trade language, and the Thompson and Secwepemc languages. Learners used Chinuk Pipa (“Chinook writing”) in religious lessons and to note songs; the Kamloops Wawa newspaper printed it in 1891–1923.
