What ʌ means
It marks the English STRUT vowel in many transcriptions.
STRUT is the English vowel set heard in “sun,” “enough,” and “wonder.” The IPA describes ʌ as an open-mid back unrounded vowel: the jaw is partly open, the tongue is toward the back, and the lips are not rounded.
The first IPA chart appeared in 1888 to help language teachers record pronunciation; ʌ joined it in 1899 as an open-mid vowel symbol.
