circumflex accent

Circumflex accent (caret)

62/94

^ is the caret, also called the hat or circumflex: a standalone copy of the accent in words like château. In chats a lone ^ points at the message above and means “this” or “what they said”. In sums it means “to the power of”, so 2^3 is 8. And ^^ or ^_^ is a smiling face.

Text symbol

What ^ means

Usually “this” or “I agree with the message above.” The caret looks like an arrow pointing up, so a reply of just ^ backs whatever was said right before it. More carets (^^^) push harder. It is not a correction and not sarcasm by default. In a fast group chat, though, it points at whatever sits directly above, which may not be the message the sender meant.

Doubled up, it turns into a face. ^^ or ^_^ are two happy, squinting eyes, a style of emoticon from Japan and Korea read the right way up. ^^; adds a drop of sweat: an awkward or embarrassed smile.

Why is a hat on the keyboard at all?

It started as an accent that typewriters put on letters. A typist could strike ^, back up and type e over it to get ê, as French and Portuguese need. Many European keyboards still treat it that way: the key does nothing until you type the next letter.

Computers then gave the free-standing mark new jobs. Without a way to raise small numbers, people wrote powers as 2^3, and calculators and spreadsheets read it the same way. Programmers use it too, for example to mean “start of the line” in search patterns. Its English name, caret, is borrowed from the proofreader's mark ‸ for “insert something here”.

Casual and neutral in chat; purely functional in maths and code.

In a busy chat, a lone ^ may point at a different message than you meant.

Worth knowing

  • In the first ASCII code (1963) this position held an up arrow, which is why exponents were once written 23. The 1967 revision swapped in ^.
  • “Caret” is Latin for “it is missing”, the meaning of the proofreader's insertion mark.

Questions people ask

3

Is ^ the same as the accent in ê?

Not quite. The accent in ê is part of the letter. A loose ^ next to an e is two separate characters, so type the real letter instead.

What does 2^10 mean?

Two to the power of ten: 2 multiplied by itself ten times, which is 1024.

Is replying with ^ rude?

No. It is a short way to agree. It can seem lazy in a formal conversation, where a full sentence works better.
