What 𞟡 means
It marks a palatalized h-like consonant followed by u.
Palatalized means the tongue rises toward the hard palate; u completes the syllable. Ethiopic shapes echo South Arabian predecessors; clear inscriptions date to the 2nd–3rd centuries CE.
A precursor appeared in Chaha stories printed in 1966. Sahle Selassie and linguist Wolf Leslau devised extra letters for Gurage sounds absent from the existing set. A 2013 revision simplified the forms; the Gurage Zone Council endorsed the orthography in 2019, introduced it in public schools in September 2020, and its new letters were encoded in Unicode 14 in 2021. The spelling changed, not the syllable it represents.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𞟡 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 14.0 (2021), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
