What 𞟢 means
It represents xʸi; raised ʸ marks palatalization. Here x is a voiceless friction sound (made without vocal-cord vibration); i is the vowel. Palatalization means the tongue moves toward the hard palate.
How did its spelling change?
Its sound value is older than its current shape.
Its earlier spelling, ⷒ, appears in a 1966 system by writer Sahle Selassie and linguist Wolf Leslau, who adapted Ethiopic letters to mark Gurage sounds. In 2013, Fekede Menuta proposed a simpler orthography; it entered Gurage Zone schools in 2020. The modern Fider covers Inor, Mesqan, Sebat Bet, and Soddo.

1Why does 𞟢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
