What ⷒ means
ⷒ is the i-vowel syllable sign in the older Gurage chart. The Ethiopic script combines a consonant and vowel in one sign. The Chaha chart puts ⷒ in the i-vowel column of the row headed by ኸ, one of its consonant bases.
The Ethiopic syllable system took shape in the 3rd and 4th centuries; ⷒ is a later Gurage addition. A 2021 proposal maps it to 𞟢 (HHYI) for modern Gurage spelling. Keep ⷒ in older quotations; use 𞟢 only when deliberately updating a text.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⷒ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
