What ⷐ means
It writes one Gurage syllable. The consonant is voiceless and rough; its vowel is short and neutral.
Ethiopic is linked to South Arabian writing, though the route is debated; by the 4th century it marked vowels in syllabic forms. Gurage added this series for sounds missing from the older set. The forms trace to 1963–64 and a major 1965 publication; a 1998 proposal and Ethiopia’s ES-781 standard supplied the formal orthographic basis in 2002. The 2021 Modern Gurage proposal broadened its label beyond Sebatbeit to include Inor, Mesqan and Soddo; it paired ⷐ with HHYA 𞟠, a more regular form for learners.
