What ኋ means
Try H + u + a on a phonetic Amharic layout.
As of 2026, one documented hybrid-letter layout produces ኋ; another may use hwa or xhwa. These layouts combine consonant and vowel keystrokes into one written syllable.
What does ኋ mean?
It marks one labialized hwa syllable, not a complete word.
Labialized means the consonant is pronounced with the lips rounded. Amharic romanization writes the syllable hwa; scholarly transliteration may write ḫʷa.
In ኋላ, the whole Amharic word means “behind” or “after.” By itself, ኋ marks the syllable, not that word's meaning.
How did the Ethiopic script develop?
It grew from South Arabian consonant writing into a syllabary. The region’s early writing evidence includes pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions, in a South Arabian-style script, from the 8th/7th centuries BC. The clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the 2nd/3rd centuries CE.
The script was developed for Geʿez and later adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and other languages. By the 4th century, consonant signs had developed vowel forms, allowing signs to represent syllables. Amharic adopted the script in the 13th or 14th century; Geʿez also served as a liturgical language.
South Arabian writing is a documented predecessor. ኋ is a single syllable character in the labialized forms of the ኀ family, not a sequence of ኀ followed by ዋ.
