What ኊ means
It marks one syllable inside a word.
The Ethiopic script is used to write Ge’ez and languages including Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre and Oromo. “Xwi” is a Unicode label; it does not prescribe one pronunciation across those languages.
Ethiopic grew from South Arabian writing used for inscriptions on stone, pottery and metal before the script was adapted for Ge’ez. A clearly developed Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second/third centuries CE; vowel marking had developed by the fourth century, creating its syllable forms.

Questions people ask
1Why does ኊ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Ethiopic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
