What ኇ means
It writes one syllable in Ethiopic text. Unicode’s label “Xoa” does not determine the pronunciation; the language and surrounding word do.
The Ethiopic script developed from writing related to ancient South Arabian scripts. Inscriptions in a South Arabian script in what is now Ethiopia and Eritrea date to the 8th or 7th century BCE; local Ethiopic-script remains appear by the 1st–3rd centuries CE. Around 350 CE, vowel marking reshaped an older system that wrote only consonants as literature in Geʽez, an older language of the region, grew. Ethiopic writing later also came to serve Amharic and Tigrinya.
Why does ኇ look different in fonts?
Different outlines can represent the same encoded syllable. Unicode identifies the character, not one fixed drawing, so Ethiopic fonts can render it in different forms.

Questions people ask
1Why does ኇ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
