ethiopic syllable xe

Ethiopic Syllable Xe

ኅ is a sixth-order Ethiopic syllable in the fidel, a writing system used for Geʽez, now chiefly liturgical, and modern languages. Its reading depends on language and word; in Amharic, this order may be a consonant with a short, neutral vowel or the consonant alone.

What ኅ means

Its sound depends on the language and the word around it. It is the sixth-order member of the ኀ/X series: signs for the same consonant paired with different vowel values. Fidel is a common name for Ethiopic syllable writing, where each sign combines consonant and vowel information. In Amharic, this order can be pronounced with a short, unstressed, neutral vowel or with no vowel; readings can differ in other languages and spelling traditions. Xe is a Unicode label, not an English pronunciation guide. Latin transliterations may write it ḫi or xī; those spellings represent the sign, not English sounds or keyboard instructions. Keyman's Modern Geʽez keyboard maps hh to ኅ (2026).

The Ethiopic script developed from South Arabian consonant writing introduced into the region around the 8th century BCE; the earliest reported Ethiopian-alphabet inscription is at Dakhanamo. A clearly formed Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the 2nd/3rd centuries CE, and vowel notation develops by the 4th century CE.

Why does Ethiopic writing mark vowels?

Adding vowel marks made the writing system work for Geʽez. The older South Arabian alphabet mainly recorded consonants. Ethiopic reshaped that system to mark vowel differences, creating a syllabary in which each sign represents a consonant with a vowel value rather than a consonant alone.

Geʽez remains chiefly liturgical, while Ethiopic writing is used for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre and other languages; it has also been adapted for Oromo. Different language orthographies can use different parts of the letter inventory or give shared signs different readings.

Inside a word, ኅ belongs to Ethiopic-script spelling; alone, it is an incomplete text fragment.

A lone ኅ is not enough to settle its reading; use the surrounding word and language.

Questions people ask

2

Does a font change make ኅ a different character?

No. Ethiopic syllables can have different glyph shapes across fonts; a changed shape alone does not mean the character changed.

Can Ethiopic languages omit letters?

Yes. The script is adapted by language, and different orthographies may use different subsets of its letters.
