ethiopic syllable ce

Ethiopic Syllable Ce

119/358

ች is a consonant-and-vowel syllable in the Ethiopic fidel script, not a word with a meaning on its own. In Amharic, it appears inside words such as ችግር (“problem”), and its sixth-order vowel may be a brief central sound or disappear. Its outline can vary by font without changing the character.

What ች means

It writes one consonant-and-vowel syllable, not a complete word. In Amharic, ች is the sixth-order form in the ቸ c/č row of the Ethiopic fidel script. The consonant sounds like the “ch” in church. The Library of Congress romanization tables (2011) write it as če/č; in Amharic, the sixth-order vowel may be a short central sound or disappear, depending on the word.

Clearly formed Ethiopic inscriptions date to the second/third centuries CE. By the fourth century CE, vowel marks had developed, turning an earlier consonant alphabet used for Geʽez into a syllabary: each consonant gained forms for different vowels. The script appears in royal inscriptions and Christian manuscripts; it later served languages including Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre, while Geʽez is chiefly liturgical.

A manuscript copied around 1650–60 uses ቸ where modern Amharic expects ች; its editors report the same pattern in other Old Amharic texts. The Ethiopic script is historically linked to South Arabian writing, though the immediate model is disputed: it may have been monumental inscriptions or a cursive form.

How do I type ች?

Use the Ethiopic input method on your device; layouts differ. Some input methods resolve a consonant and vowel-order choice into one stored syllabic character. If your layout uses that grid, choose the sixth-order entry in the ቸ row.

The romanization če/č is a reading guide, not a key sequence. Each input method can assign its own keystrokes, so check the layout’s help for the actual sixth-order entry.

The outline can vary by font. Unicode identifies the syllabic character, while its chart shows one glyph form; Ethiopic fonts may draw variant forms for the same character. A different silhouette alone does not mean a different syllable.
