What ቸ means
It pairs the ch consonant with the first vowel form. Each form joins the consonant to a different vowel. In Amharic, the word sets ቸ’s exact vowel. Scribes added it in the 14th–15th centuries for sounds Amharic needed.
South Arabian writing reached the Horn around the 8th century BCE and was adapted for Geʿez. Some scholarship dates Proto-Geʿez, an early form of the script seen at Yeha and Matara, to around the 4th–5th centuries BCE. As of 2026, the earliest known Ethiopic-alphabet inscription is at Dakhanamo. Around the 4th century CE, vowel marks made the script a left-to-right syllabary: each sign joins a consonant with a vowel.
