ethiopic syllable ci

Ethiopic Syllable Ci

116/358

ቺ is the Ethiopic letter for a “chi” syllable — the “ch” of “cheese” plus “ee.” It is the third vowel form in the ቸ series and lives inside words in Amharic, Tigrinya and other languages of the script. Sent alone, it is a fragment, not a message.

Text symbol

What ቺ means

It marks the “chi” syllable in the ቸ series.

ቺ is the third vowel form of the ቸ series: same consonant, different vowel, and the vowel is built into the letter itself. In Amharic this alphabet is called fidel. You will see it romanized as ci or chi — or či in scholarly systems — depending on the language and transliteration.

Every letter in the series already carries its vowel, so a lone ቺ is a syllable, not a word. If it arrives by itself, ask which word or language it came from before reading into it. On a mnemonic Ethiopic keyboard, type c then i.

Where did Ethiopic writing come from?

It grew out of an older consonant alphabet.

The earliest regional examples are South Arabian-style consonant inscriptions from the 8th/7th centuries BC. Ethiopic writing appears by the 1st–3rd centuries AD, and in the 4th century it became an abugida — a script whose consonant shapes bend to show their vowel.

Early inscriptions recorded royal deeds and religious claims; Ge’ez survives mainly as a church language while the script went on to write Amharic, Tigrinya and beyond. The South Arabian link is documented, its exact route debated.

Neutral inside a word; as decoration it can evoke Ge’ez liturgy or Ethiopian royal and Amhara history — the glyph alone names no writer.

A lone ቺ is a fragment, not a reaction — ask which word or language it came from.

Worth knowing

  • The script never retired: Ge’ez survives as a church language while the same letters — ቺ included — still print everyday Amharic.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ቺ look different in two fonts?

The font draws it differently. Ethiopic typefaces give the same encoded letter different outlines, and a device without an Ethiopic font may not show it at all.
