What ቻ means
In one Amharic phonetic layout, type c then a. A documented fidel keyboard maps that pair to ቻ; native Ethiopic layouts may put the syllable on different keys.
What sound does ቻ represent?
It writes the plain “cha” syllable. For an English sound guide, use the “ch” in “chat” followed by the “a” in “father.” An Amharic Latin-letter spelling writes cha; Tigrinya’s romanization writes čā (č marks the same ch sound and ā a long vowel). Amharic words ending in ቻ include ብቻ and ጋብቻ.
Early inscriptions in Ethiopia and Eritrea include pseudo-Sabaean consonant writing from the 8th–7th centuries BCE, showing connections with South Arabian scripts. Clearly recognizable Ethiopic writing appears in inscriptions from the 2nd–3rd centuries CE. Used to write Ge’ez, it gained vowel marks by the 4th century; those marks give consonant signs forms for following vowels. The vowel-marked series spread into Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre and other languages, and ቻ belongs to it.

1Why does ቻ look different in another font?
Yes: fonts can draw the same ቻ with different designs. As of 2026, a device without Ethiopic font coverage may show a box or question mark instead; that is a display fallback, not a different character.
