What ⶻ means
ⶻ marks a syllable in Bench writing. Unicode 17.0 groups it in the CCH series for Bench. The character's name and the keyboard mnemonic CCa identify it; neither gives a pronunciation that works across languages.
The Ethiopic script is much older than ⶻ. Monumental evidence for Proto-Ge'ez, an early ancestor of the script, is placed around the fourth–fifth century BCE. Its vowel-bearing writing system, where signs represent consonants with vowels, developed in the third–fourth centuries CE. Over time, the script gained forms adapted for additional languages.
Why was this syllable added?
It fills a spelling need in Bench. A 2004 proposal based on Ethiopia's national character-set standard described Extended Ethiopic as essential to orthographies including Bench and recorded its use in Ethiopia and Eritrea. ⶻ belongs to language writing, not a universal Ethiopic shorthand.
How do I type ⶻ?
Use a Bench keyboard layout when writing Bench. On the GFF Bench keyboard, type CCa to produce ⶻ; capitals and doubled letters mark distinctions English lacks. This is an input recipe, not a universal transliteration.
If your language layout omits it, use a Unicode character picker. Unicode specifies the stored character, not one universal Ethiopic keyboard.
Technical and language-specific: ⶻ belongs inside Bench writing, where it marks a syllable.
Treat CCHAA as a character label, not a pronunciation guide.

1Why does ⶻ look different in different fonts?
Font design changes its outline. Unicode 17.0 says its reference glyphs are not prescriptive, so fonts that support Ethiopic may draw it differently; a font without coverage may show a box.
