What ⶾ means
Type CCo on the GFF Bench keyboard. Its manual v1.0 maps ⶾ to that mnemonic; for other Ethiopic characters, the manual points users to the Unicode Keyboard.
If ⶾ appears as an empty box, the selected font or app lacks a drawing for it; the text still contains the same character.
What is Ccho in Bench writing?
It is the o-form in Bench’s retroflex CCH syllable series. Retroflex means the consonant is made with the tongue curled back. Bench spelling distinguishes this CCH consonant series from the plain C series; the final o identifies this member’s vowel order. These extra syllables extend Ethiopic spelling for Bench without making a separate script.
The Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second or third centuries CE; vowel notation is documented by the fourth century. A 1998 proposal to add Ethiopic characters reports that the Bench CCH series had been proposed by 1981, had been used in publishing for at least ten years, and entered Bench schools in 1994.
