ethiopic syllable qya

Ethiopic syllable Qya

ⷀ is a syllable character from an older Gurage spelling system. It records a palatalized consonant—a sound made with the tongue raised toward the roof of the mouth—in a row based on ቀ. In some older print it can appear as ቐ; read it as part of the surrounding Gurage text.

What ⷀ means

It marks a palatalized member of the Ethiopic ቀ row. Chaha is a Gurage language. The spelling project began in 1962, and this form appears in a printed Chaha text from 1966. Its writers extended the Ethiopic script—a writing system used by several languages of Ethiopia, with consonant forms that change for different vowels—to mark Gurage sounds the established syllable set did not distinguish. Palatalized means pronounced with the tongue raised toward the roof of the mouth.

The connection to ቀ is part of the spelling design, not a guess from appearance: the Gurage convention built palatalized rows from existing Ethiopic bases. Read this character within the spelling of a Gurage-language text.

Why can ⷀ look like ቐ?

Older print and software could give it the shape of ቐ. In the printed Chaha text, the added mark sometimes touched its base, creating that appearance without changing the speech sound. A computer publication from 1996–97 also used ቐ in place of ⷀ.

A 2021 Unicode technical note says modern Gurage spelling no longer uses this series and recommends treating surviving examples as historical. Check the document's spelling system before interpreting or normalizing the form.

How do I type ⷀ?

Enter ⷀ as one complete character. Use a Unicode-capable input method that supports it; the exact keystrokes depend on your system. Do not assemble it from ቀ and an arbitrary mark. Some older Ethiopic software represented extensions as separate pieces, and poor font alignment could change their appearance. If the glyph is missing, the font cannot display it; the text character itself has not changed.

A specialist form tied to Gurage writing; it signals a language-specific spelling context.

Check the spelling convention before replacing ⷀ with ቐ.

Why does ⷀ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
