What ቶ means
It represents one consonant–vowel syllable, transliterated “to.”
In the ተ series, the consonant represented by t stays the same while the vowel changes; ቶ is the o-form. The Ethiopic script was used for Ge’ez, a liturgical language, and later for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.
Early Ethiopian and Eritrean inscriptions—writing on objects—include pseudo-Sabaean texts in a script related to South Arabian writing, from the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A distinct Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions in the second/third centuries CE; by the fourth century CE, it marked vowels. These dates trace the script, not the origin of this exact form.
