Ethiopic Syllable Ha

It writes an h syllable with the basic vowel of its row.

In Amharic fidel, the syllable-based writing system, each sign joins a consonant with a vowel; ሀ is the basic-vowel form of the h row. The recognizable Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second or third century CE, and its ordered vowel forms were in place by the fourth century.

Sabaic inscriptions in northern Ethiopia, written in an early South Arabian script called musnad, date from the first half of the first millennium B.C. and document Red Sea contact. Ethiopic letter forms belong to a lineage compared with South Arabian 𐩠. The script continued in Geʿez manuscripts and was adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.

Why do ሀ, ሐ, and ኀ sound alike?

Modern Amharic can pronounce all three with the same h sound.

Geʿez distinguished the older h-like sounds up to the sixth century. After the pronunciations merged in Amharic, spelling could still preserve inherited forms; in names and religious texts, keep the established spelling instead of choosing by sound alone.

Different outlines can still represent the same encoded character. Unicode allows alternate Ethiopic glyph forms, and Abyssinica SIL offers language-specific variants; an outline change alone does not mean the text contains another character.
