What ከ means
Alone in Amharic, ከ means “from” or “out of.”
In a longer word, it is one syllable of the Ethiopic k-series: the k consonant comes with the vowel shown by this form. The whole word determines the translation. Latin-letter transcriptions vary: Amharic charts give kä or kə, while some English-facing dictionaries use ke; these are conventions for the same character.
It is an evolved writing unit, not a one-off invention
The writing system behind ከ grew from a South Arabian consonant alphabet brought into the Horn of Africa around the eighth century BCE. The archaeological record for Axum cites an inscription at Dakhanamo as the oldest Ethiopian alphabet attestation it records. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second/third centuries CE.
By the fourth century CE, vowel notation had reshaped the consonant alphabet: each consonant family gained separate vowel forms, making a syllable-based script. The system served Ge’ez, a language used chiefly in liturgy. As of 2026, Ethiopic also writes Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and Oromo. The precise steps in the change remain partly unresolved.
How do I type ከ?
On the documented phonetic layout, type ke; bare k may produce ክ.
That shortcut belongs to the input method, not Unicode. Unicode does not prescribe which keystrokes enter each Ethiopic syllable: some input methods combine consonant and vowel keystrokes. If yours uses a different scheme, choose its k-series entry rather than assuming the Latin spelling will work.
Neutral in Ethiopic writing; the language and place in the word determine how it reads.
Its “from” meaning is specific to Amharic; it does not carry that translation in every Ethiopic-language text.

1Why does ከ look different in fonts?
That is expected: Unicode identifies the syllable, while each font draws its own outline. A different shape alone does not mean a different character.
