What ኪ means
Use an Ethiopic keyboard’s k family and i order.
Unicode does not specify keyboard input codes, so layouts choose their own key paths. Many Ethiopic input methods map a consonant family and vowel order to the corresponding syllable.
Fonts can draw the same Ethiopic syllable with different outlines. If ኪ appears as a box, the active font lacks a usable Ethiopic glyph; this display failure does not change the character.
What does ኪ mean in a word?
It contributes a k+i syllable; the word around it gives meaning.
Ethiopic writing, also called fidel, groups syllables by consonant and vowel order. ኪ is the i-vowel form in the k family; ክ is another cell in that family, not a decorative version. The syllable sounds like k followed by the vowel in “machine.” Latin transliterations may spell it ki or kī; the mark reflects a transliteration choice, not a different Ethiopic character. This script is used for Ge'ez texts in worship and languages such as Amharic, Tigre, and Oromo, so the surrounding word and language determine its translation.
By the end of the first millennium BCE, writing related to ancient South Arabian scripts had reached the Horn of Africa and was adapted for Ge'ez. The earliest reported Ethiopic alphabet inscription comes from Dakhanamo. Royal inscriptions preserve South-Arabian writing and Ge'ez written without vowel signs. Around the 4th century CE, vowel notation reshaped the consonant script into a left-to-right syllabary: each sign represents a consonant-vowel syllable. In the Pre-Aksumite period, before the kingdom of Aksum, some inscriptions are more purely Sabaean, an ancient South Arabian language; others record a distinct local language also used beyond monuments.
A lone ኪ gives a syllable, not a complete translation; the surrounding word and language determine what it says.

1Why does ኪ appear as a box?
The font lacks a usable Ethiopic glyph. Switch to a font with Ethiopic coverage; the box is a missing-glyph marker, not ኪ itself.
