What ኦ means
It is the first-series form for the o vowel. In Amharic fidel, the Ethiopic writing system, ኦ is the seventh form of the first series. That series mostly works as a vowel carrier in modern Amharic. A brief glottal stop may be heard at the start or middle of a word but is often dropped, so the written form alone does not call for a hard stop.
The label preserves an older sound analysis. In Geʽez, አ represents a glottal stop, while ዐ represents a pharyngeal consonant, made farther back in the throat. Modern Amharic has weakened those consonantal values; “glottal” describes the historical series distinction, not a rule to force a stop into every word.
Ethiopic writing descends through Old South Arabian writing, adapted to write Geʽez, the classical language of Ethiopia. The earliest writing in Ethiopia and Eritrea includes pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions, modeled on Sabaean writing, from 8th/7th centuries BCE. A distinct indigenous Ethiopic script appears in the 1st–3rd centuries CE, and its vowel forms develop by the 4th century CE. Amharic adopted the script in the 13th or 14th century and became a language of elementary instruction in the early 20th century.
How do I type ኦ?
Use an Ethiopic keyboard or layout-specific input tool. Unicode does not set one key map. Some layouts let you enter a consonant-vowel position and resolve it to one stored syllable; choose the first-series o form in your layout.
Some fonts draw the same Ethiopic syllable with a different outline. A change in shape can be typographic rather than a different spelling.
Is ኦ the same as ዖ?
No: they are o forms from different Ethiopic series. ኦ belongs to the first series; ዖ belongs to the pharyngeal series.
Geʽez keeps the older consonant distinction behind the two series, while modern Amharic often weakens or merges those values. A word’s spelling determines which form belongs there, so sound alone may not settle the choice.

1Questions people ask
1Does “glottal” mean I must pronounce a stop?
No. In modern Amharic, the first series often serves as a vowel carrier and its glottal stop is commonly absent; the label preserves the older Geʽez distinction.
