What ⶊ means
ⶊ spells a Me’en syllable named “glottal oa.” “Glottal” means a brief closure in the throat. Read the character within its word; alone, it does not identify the full word. A font without glyph coverage may show a missing-glyph box.
Ethiopic writing is historically linked to South Arabian scripts and first served Ge’ez, an ancient regional language. Vowel marks added to consonant signs made the system quasi-syllabic by the 3rd–4th centuries CE; a clearly formed Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the 2nd–3rd-century CE. Later extensions served more languages. The 2004 proposal for this extension followed Ethiopia’s 2002 national standard and cited Me’en publications from 1999–2002.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⶊ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
