What ⶋ means
It is a syllable sign in the Me’en writing set.
Unicode groups ⶋ under “Syllables for Me’en.” The extension adds characters for orthographies beyond the basic Ethiopic inventory.
Ethiopia’s 2004 proposal derives the extension from national standard ES 781:2002 and names Me’en among the languages it supports.
How old is the Ethiopic script?
The wider Ge’ez script is ancient; ⶋ is a modern addition.
Precursors of Ge’ez appear in pre-Aksumite graffiti in the Horn of Africa. A fully formed writing system whose signs combine consonants and vowels appears in mid-fourth-century Ezana inscriptions.
The script was later adapted for many languages across the Horn of Africa.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⶋ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
