ethiopic syllable zo

Ethiopic Syllable Zo

The Ethiopic script, also called fidel, uses ዞ for one syllable inside a word, not a standalone message. “Zo” is a chart label, not a fixed pronunciation. A box can signal missing font support or an old encoding.

What ዞ means

It writes one consonant-vowel syllable.

Each sign pairs a consonant with a vowel; ዞ is the seventh form in the ዘ series.

South Arabian writing reached the Horn around the eighth century BCE; Ethiopic developed from it. Inscriptions show a distinct Ethiopic script by the second/third centuries CE. As of 2026, the earliest documented example is from Dakhanamo. By the fourth century CE, vowel marks changed the consonant alphabet so each sign represented a syllable. It first served Ge’ez, used in worship, then Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre and Oromo.

Why does ዞ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
