What ሄ means
It combines the H-series consonant with the e vowel in one syllable. In a transliteration, H names the consonant series and e its vowel order. In Amharic, ሄ appears in ሄደ (“he went”) and ሄሊኮፕተር (“helicopter”).
The Ethiopic script grew from the Old South Arabian writing tradition and was used to write Ge'ez, a classical Ethiopian language. Among the earliest writing evidence in the region are pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions, written with consonants only, from the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A distinct Ethiopian script for Ge'ez appears between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. By the 4th century, it had begun shifting toward an abugida, a system where vowel changes are built into consonant characters. The script later served Amharic and other languages.
How do I type ሄ?
Use an Ethiopic keyboard; its key recipe depends on the layout. To type ሄ with Keyman GFF Amharic, enter hie (version 1.9.1).
That recipe is specific to this layout. Ethiopic input systems can turn consonant-and-vowel keystrokes into one stored syllabic character, so another keyboard may use different keys.
A different outline does not necessarily mean different text: Ethiopic fonts can draw alternate forms of the same conceptual syllable. Check the underlying character before treating an unfamiliar shape as a different letter.
Neutral within Ethiopic text; by itself, ሄ is a syllable sample, not a whole-word translation.
Do not translate ሄ alone as “he went”; that meaning belongs to the whole word ሄደ.

3Questions people ask
2Can ሄ mean “he went”?
No. The Amharic word ሄደ means “he went”; ሄ is only its first syllable. Read the whole word to get that translation.
Why does ሄ look different in another font?
It can. Ethiopic fonts may use alternate outlines for the same conceptual syllable, so a changed shape alone does not mean the text changed.
