What ሃ means
ሃ is the fourth vowel form in the Ethiopic h series. In this writing system, the shapes in a consonant family change with the vowel: ሃ combines the h-series consonant with its fourth vowel form.
Writing in Ethiopia and Eritrea is attested in consonant-only inscriptions from the eighth or seventh century BCE. The clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in the second or third century CE, and its vowel-bearing forms had developed by the fourth century. Early inscriptions show local languages and everyday writing alongside learned Sabaean, a South Arabian language; the later syllabic redesign made vowels explicit.
The Ethiopic script developed from a South Arabian consonant tradition. It became the writing system of Ge'ez and was adapted for Amharic and Tigrinya. In Tigrinya, ሀ and ሃ are different spelling choices: Latin-letter spelling writes them ha and hā, with the bar marking a long vowel. Amharic charts commonly label ሃ ha; some h-series distinctions can sound alike in Amharic while remaining distinct in writing.
How do I type ሃ?
On SIL Ethiopic 2.0.1, press h, then a. This layout builds a syllable from a consonant-family key followed by a vowel-order key; h alone selects the row's default form, and a completes ሃ.
Neutral; it identifies Ethiopic-script text and carries no emotional tone by itself.
In Tigrinya spelling, ሃ and first-order ሀ are separate; choose by the word, not just the h consonant.
